His Excellency Wang Zhongyu, President Wang Jiming, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Good morning to everyone in Beijing. I hope you’re enjoying an excellent day at CBCSD’s 14th Annual Conference, under the theme of Deepening Reform and Opening-up - Corporate Sustainability in the New Era. I am very sorry that my travel schedule does not allow me to be with you.

The way that business approaches sustainability is changing rapidly, as new opportunities and challenges emerge. The picture has become more complex - it's no longer just about emissions, reputation or jobs. Rather, it's about all these aspects at the same time.

Whereas previously companies engaged with sustainability through philanthropy and Corporate Social Responsibility programs, smart companies have now integrated sustainability deeply into their decision-making process. To run a successful company, business leaders must consider not just the financial return, but also their impact on society and the environment.

Strong and visionary CEO leadership is essential if business is to survive and thrive in this environment.

There are important tools available to help you with this. The Better Business, Better World report outlines how sustainable business opportunities could yield at least 12 trillion dollars in business value by 2030, including 5 trillion dollars in Asia, while generating up to 380 million jobs.

Similarly, the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) clearly define a new path forward for sustainable business. In time, these recommendations will completely overhaul corporate governance and create more transparency towards Capital Markets.

Alongside this, one thing is clear: these challenges cannot be solved by one company alone. On the contrary, collaboration is becoming increasingly important. Different companies must come together to achieve sustainability together.

CBCSD is leading this collaboration in China. The meetings it has held over the past year provide a unique collaborative space for business, and a platform from which to engage with government and other key stakeholders.

CBCSD and WBCSD have worked closely together on some important initiatives in this period. Recent examples include the release of a series of China-specific case studies designed to provide insights into sustainability reporting trends covered by WBCSD’s Reporting Exchange. This publication coincides with the completion of the Chinese translation of the Reporting Exchange website, with CBCSD as a main contributor. Using these platforms, WBCSD and CBCSD aim to better support Chinese companies’ sustainability management and the Chinese government’s Green Belt & Road initiative.

CBCSD reached another milestone in the past year with the launch of the China Enterprises Sustainability Index project during the 2017 China Top 500 Enterprises Summit. This project tackles Chinese companies’ need to transform, upgrade and deepen their sustainability management, while also providing stakeholders with companies’ non-financial information and helping Chinese business to communicate their best practices globally.

I look forward to further publications by CBCSD in the period ahead, in particular the launch of the Global Economic Governance and Business Data Service Platform. Together, we can rally for change in a much bigger way. I look forward to working with each of you to achieve this.

I wish you successful deliberations over the rest of your day. Thank you!
